2009: European year of creativity and innovation
The European Parliament recently gave its support to a European Commission proposal to designate 2009 as the "European Year of Creativity and Innovation". Each year the European Union chooses a theme for a campaign to raise public awareness. Previous successful initiatives included the 2007 European Year of Equal Opportunities and 2008 European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.
For 2009, the Commission proposal is to highlight the role of creativity and innovation as key competences in line with its Communication "A broad-based innovation strategy for the EU" and the current focus on competitiveness, knowledge and skills of the Lisbon strategy.
The "year" should be implemented through measures like promotional campaigns, events and initiatives at the European, national and regional levels. Specific objectives will contribute to promoting creativity and innovation, including the development of closer links between the arts, business and universities and support for design, including design management skills and basic notions of protection of intellectual property.
In addition to the proposal to focus these activities in the context of the Lifelong Learning Programme, the Parliament stressed the importance of all EU framework programmes that support innovation, including programmes related to culture, communication, enterprise, cohesion, rural development, research and the information society.
